GCT'S PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 2009
2009 - a special year
This is a special year for Galapagos and brings a year of celebrations, for a variety of reasons:
- The 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin
- The 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of The Species
- The 50th anniversary of the founding of the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galapagos and the Galapagos National Park
Due to this significant year a collaboration of organisations across the UK has been set up, called Darwin200. They all celebrated Darwin's 200th birthday in February 2009 with an exciting programme of activities, which started in July 2008 and will run to the end of 2009. For more information about Darwin200 and to view some of the activities, please visit www.darwin200.org.
Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution (BRLSI)
16 Queen Square, Bath, 7 for 7.30pm
Jyll Bradley www.jyllbradley.net is a visual artist who visited Galapagos in 2008 as part of GCT's Gulbenkian www.gulbenkian.org.uk/ Artist's Residency programme, where artists visit Galapagos and are uniquely able to reflect on many aspects of the Islands' dramatic sites - conveying a unique impression of the habitat, engaging with the science and raising issues related to the lives of ordinary people on a threatened planet.
The focus of much of Jyll's work is on plants and during her visit she worked closely with the Solutions for Ecological Restoration coordinator, at the Charles Darwin Foundation.
To book your tickets, please telephone the BRLSI direct on 01225 312084
Tickets are priced at £4, or £2 to BRLSI members & students. For information on other events hosted by the BRLSI, please refer to their website (http://www.brlsi.org/darwin2009/).
Anniversaries Special Galapagos Day, with Sir David Attenborough, Andrew Marr and Felipe Cruz, Royal Geographical Society, London, 6pm
This year we invite you to join us at our 14th annual Galapagos Day event! The occasion is attended by members of the Trust and it’s supporters and those with a passion for the islands. The evening starts with a reception where you are invited to speak to our staff, Galapagos experts and guest speakers over a glass of wine. There is also the opportunity to purchase gifts from the various stalls located in the three receptions rooms and to learn about some of the projects that we support.
The main event begins at 7pm, with a welcome from our Chairman. We will then invite Sir David Attenborough, our president, Andrew Marr, and Galapagos-born Felipe Cruz, director of technical assistance at the Charles Darwin Foundation, to take part in a discussion about Galapagos. Andrew Marr will chair the discussion and then invite members of the audience to ask questions.
Each year GCT's annual raffle is drawn, with the star prize, of a trip for two to the islands, donated by Discovery Initiatives. This event will also see the final leg of a very special book, which will also be auction on the night – for more details of the book please visit On the Origin of Species. Following this you are invited to enjoy a final glass of wine with the opportunity to purchase more gifts, which is ideal as you start to think about Christmas!
We are very sorry, Galapagos Day 2009 has now SOLD OUT.
GCT in partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) www.darwinfoundation.org, Ocean Adventures www.oceanadventures.com.ec and Abercrombie & Kent www.abercrombiekent.co.uk have
organised an exclusive fundraising trip to Galapagos.
The trip includes a 7 day luxury cruise aboard the M/V Eclipse, special receptions in Quito and Galapagos, guest speakers on board including Randal Keynes, Darwin's great great grandson, and special events at the Charles Darwin Research Station.
The cruise will raise funds for the Station's new Charles Darwin Center for Galapagos.
The Linnean Society of London, all day event.
This is an academic event that will analyse the breadth and depth of research in Galapagos. A group of Galapagos experts from all over the world will assemble to discuss the future of Galapagos using their area of expertise to inform on some of the issues and the current research work taking place. The symposium will include looking at Galapagos as a living laboratory now, and how it is an example to the rest of the world and how it needs saving even more than ever before.
More information on this event is soon to be announced, including booking details and speakers.
