RABIDA ISLAND

Galapagos sea lion

More of an islet than an island, Rabida is south of Santiago and is often considered the geographic centre of the Galapagos archipelago.

A wet landing onto a red sand beach populated with sea lions has saltbush (Cryptocarpus pyriformis) behind, and is a saltwater lagoon surrounded by mangroves. The lagoon is home to sea lions and brown pelicans as well as pintail ducks and stilts. Flamingos can sometimes be seen, although they rarely breed on the island.
