Juvenile Galapagos giant tortoise

Dear friends,

Thank you for your support. The tortoise breeding centre is one of the huge successes of the Charles Darwin Research Station. Without it the Espanola tortoise would now be extinct and other species would be severely threatened with extinction.

The Galapagos giant tortoises are the iconic creatures of the Galapagos. It would be a shame if these creatures, who once roamed freely across the Galapagos, were to disappear. Their populations are under threat from non-native species, such as goats, donkeys and wild pigs, as well as pressures from factors such as the increasing population and the pressure for more tourism.

We continue to need your help if we are to stop this from happening so we are delighted that you have chosen to help us in this way.

On this page you will be able to access information on the giant tortoises as well as see updated pictures of the tortoises you are helping to adopt at the Breeding Centre. You will be able to see how they grow and are looked after.

Thank you again for your help and support.
